Celebrating More Than 50 Years of Drama in Sligo

Over the years Sligo Drama Circle has used many places for the rehearsal of plays and making of sets and costumes. Sligo Columban Club, Sligo Social Services, Scoil Ursula. For those who remember the sheds in the Market Yard in Sligo, the last shed nearest to the Temple Street end belonged to the Sligo Drama Circle. Sets and props were stored in the shed. Play readings were held there and even the odd performance and social gathering took place there. Michael Kennedy's pottery shop was next door. Eventually, Sligo Corporation decided to develop the Market Yard and proposed to demolish all of the sheds. As part of the re-development, a purpose built home for the Drama Circle was constructed on the site of where the old public toilets stood. Our new home consists of a rehearsal space, costume store room, set storage area and toilets. This home is of significant benefit to the Drama Circle and the wider theatrical community as it is also used by other groups for rehearsals. The space is also used for small scale performances which gives many people the opportunity to act or direct for the first time. "Big Maggie" by John B. Keane was the first play to be rehearsed in the new rehearsal space in the Market Yard in 1999.
